Sitting Pretty

Over the past few weeks, Sebastian has mastered sitting up. If you put him into a seated position, he is just fine. And he is starting to try to pull himself into a seated position.

Sebastian is a Kid Scientist!

Sebastian was a kid scientist today.  We did a research study at Harvard's Laboratory for Developmental Studies, where they

investigate how infants and children perceive and reason about the world around them. Our studies are supported by funds from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Child Health and Development, and they explore such topics as how infants perceive partly hidden objects, how children learn words for new objects, and how infants and children understand number. We have found that babies and young children may know a lot more than people used to believe.

He sat on my lap while watching a 10 minute video.  Loads of cameras were tracking his eye movements and reactions, as shown in this video of another study:

This article is about the lab director and her very interesting work:

Sebastian cried a bit at minute 8 (he wanted a nap), but I certainly enjoyed the experience, and will do it again.  We think it will be good for Sebastian to grow up knowing thatscience is something he can participate in.

6 months + 2 weeks

We had pop into the pediatrician this morning to double check (no ear infection, could be the tail end of a mild case virus thats been going around, or the very early emergence of a molar).  At every visit, our doctor a checks a baby's size.

On July 9, at 6 months, Sebastian was:

  Length = 28 inches / 71 cm
  Weight = 20 lbs 12 oz / 9.4 kg
   Head Circumference = 45 cm

Today, just 2 weeks later, he is:

  Length = 29.5 inches / 75 cm
  Weight = 21 lbs 11 oz / 9.8 kg
  Head Circumference = 46 cm

He grew an inch and a half in 2 weeks.

Maybe he was a little grumpy, sore and tired because he is growing so dang much.

We're gonna need a bigger tub

Sebastian has outgrown his infant bathtub, and moved onto a safety seat in our regular tub (speaking of safety, I can assure you that hands were standing by just out of shot to make sure he is OK).

These photos do not begin to show how much he is enjoying all the water.

6 Months

Today Sebastian had his 6 month check up. He got several immunizations (and proved he has healthy lungs with a rather amazing cry after the jabs; he did calm down nicely after just a couple of minutes of fussing). He's on track with all developmental milestones, and continues to grow.

Length = 28 inches / 71 cm

Weight = 20 lbs 12 oz / 9.4 kg

Head Circumference = 45 cm

He is larger than 95% of children his age.

Wow. 6 months. I sometimes feel like I've known him forever. And other times, it feels like these 6 months have gone by in the blink of an eye.
